Eco-friendly hikes

Are you planning a more environmentally friendly summer vacation? Then Voss is a perfect holiday destination. Using trains, buses, or the gondola, you can find many amazing hikes in our region.

All our suggestions start with public transportation, which results in a lower carbon footprint throughout the journey.

Each route is selected to give you a glimpse into the diverse mountains of Voss. Choose between shorter hikes in beautiful landscape, or embark on longer adventures to one of the many DNT (The Norwegian Trekking Association) cabins.

Choose an experience that not only delights you, but also contributes to future generations having similar experiences.

Kvanndalsstølen

Sherpatrappene i Kvanndal

On the hike to Kvanndalsstølen, you walk from the lush forest in the valley to the high mountain terrain at the top. The hike starts at the ferry dock in Kvanndal, which has good bus connections from Voss. Plan your journey here (from Voss Station to Kvanndal ferry dock). From here, you walk a short distance on a gravel road, past the campsite, and on a trail before you reach the Sherpa steps. The steps are an impressive attraction in themselves, but you also pass many beautiful viewpoints. There is a significant elevation gain, so remember to bring a waterbottle.

Kaldavasshytta

Ugjerdsdalen, Mjølfjell

An excellent hike for families. The hike starts with a train ride from Voss to Upsete station. From here, you walk at a steady incline up to Geitavatnet, which offers a refreshing swim on warm summer days. After a good break by the lake, the hike continues through beautiful high mountain terrain to Kaldavatni. You will find the two unattended cabins a short walk out on the ridge that separates the lake in two.

Grindaflethytta

Mjølfjell

This gem of a cabin can be reached from several starting points. If you take the train, you can hike from Ljosandbotnen, Upsete, or Flåm station. The route from Flåm is quite challenging, while the other two routes have less elevation gain and are easier, especially if you are carrying a heavy backpack.

Nansenbu

Nansenbu

If you are fit, you can easily reach this cabin on foot, from Voss town center. Walk through Prestegardsmoen, past Bordalsgjelet, and up to Gjelle on gravel and some asphalt roads. From there, a marked trail leads to Nansenbu. The cabin is a little gem situated in wild and untouched high mountain terrain at about 1200 masl. The cabin is unattended and open all year round, nestled in the lush Torfinnsdalen valley, which also offers excellent fishing opportunities. It is also a great starting point for hikes to all the peaks and fishing lakes on mount Gråsida.

Dagsturhytta

Dagsturhytta, Voss

You can reach the day trip cabin either on foot from the town center or start from the top of the gondola (Hangurstoppen). Whether you're seeking elevation gain or just want to enjoy the scenery, the day trip cabin is a great destination. If you walk from the town center, you first walk to Voss Folkemuseum or Heggjavad, then follow our route description. If you want to start from Hangurstoppen, take the gondola from Voss Station and follow the signs to the day trip cabin.

Lønahorgi

Dame med hund, på veg til Lønahorgi. Hangurstoppen langt unna, i bakgrunnen.

From Lønahorgi (1410 masl), you get a spectacular view. Here, you can see four glaciers: Fresvikbreen, Hardangerjøkulen, Vossaskavlen, and Folgefonna. If you start the hike by taking the gondola from Voss town center to Hangurstoppen, you do not need a car. From Hangurstoppen, follow the T-marked trail and signs towards Lønahorgi.
